Our fee promise

Clear fees, agreed before we begin.

Every situation is different, but we’re transparent: you’ll know your price before any work starts. Prices are posted in our office, and we can send you our price list on request. Start with a free general consultation. State filing and publication fees are paid to the state and shown separately from ours.

How it works

1. Free first conversation: we talk through your idea, the type of business and the name you want.

2. We prepare and file: your formation with New York State, your EIN and the registrations your business needs.

3. Publication and next steps: we guide you through New York's publication requirement and explain what comes next.

4. Stay in good standing: we help you keep track of state filings and tax deadlines, and the same team prepares your business taxes.

Common questions

Should I form an LLC or a C Corporation?

We explain the general differences in plain language so you can decide. For legal or tax advice about your specific situation, we can refer you to an attorney or CPA.

What is the New York publication requirement?

Within 120 days of forming, a New York LLC must publish a notice in two newspapers for six weeks and then file proof with the state. Skipping it can suspend the LLC's authority to do business. We help you with each step.

Can I get an EIN without a Social Security number?

Often, yes. An EIN can be issued using an ITIN, and we can help you apply for both.

Does an EIN cost money?

No. The IRS issues EINs for free. Be careful of websites that charge for it.

Do I need a sales tax certificate?

If you sell taxable goods or services in New York, you must register for a Certificate of Authority at least 20 days before you start.

What do I need to do after my business is formed?

Keep up with your filings, like the biennial statement every two years, sales tax returns if you collect sales tax, and your yearly business taxes. We help you stay on schedule.

Can you register a DBA (assumed name)?

Yes. If you want to do business under a different name, a sole proprietor files an assumed name certificate with the county clerk, and an LLC or corporation files with New York State. We prepare the filing and explain what comes next.

Should my business be an S-corporation?

Some growing businesses save on self-employment tax by electing S-corporation status. We explain in plain language whether it may fit, and help with the federal Form 2553 and New York's Form CT-6. For tax or legal advice on your specific case, we can refer you to a CPA or attorney.

What are the steps to start a business in New York?

1. Choose your structure: sole proprietor, DBA, LLC or C Corporation (with an optional S Corporation election).

2. File your formation papers with the New York State Department of State.

3. Get your free EIN from the IRS (an ITIN works too).

4. Complete the LLC publication requirement within 120 days.

5. Get the licenses and permits your business needs. In New York City, NYC Business Express shows what applies to you.

6. Register for a sales tax Certificate of Authority at least 20 days before you start, if you sell taxable goods or services.

7. Open a business bank account and set up bookkeeping from day one.

8. Ask about business insurance.

9. Keep up with yearly taxes and the biennial statement. We help with every step.
