ITIN applications in Brooklyn — keep your passport in your hands.

As an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent, we verify your documents here in our office, so in most cases your passport goes home with you the same day.

What a Certifying Acceptance Agent does differently.

Applying on your own

Original documents mailed to the IRS; passport out of your hands for weeks; errors discovered after rejection.

Applying with us

Documents verified in our office; in most cases your passport is returned the same day; application reviewed before it is submitted; handled in your language.

Do you need an ITIN?

An ITIN is issued by the IRS for tax purposes only, for people who must file but cannot get a Social Security number, including spouses and dependents, or whose ITIN has expired. An ITIN does not give work authorization and does not change immigration status. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice.

What to bring

Common questions

Does the IRS charge for an ITIN?

No. The IRS does not charge an application fee. Our service fee is explained and agreed with you before we begin.

How long does it take?

The IRS usually takes several weeks, and longer during tax season or if you apply from abroad. We'll tell you what to expect for your case.

My ITIN expired. What do I do?

An ITIN that is not used on a federal tax return for three years in a row expires. If you need to file, renew it first so your return and refund are not delayed.

Do I need to file a tax return with my application?

In most cases, yes. Form W-7 is usually sent with a federal tax return unless an IRS exception applies. We check which applies to you.

Can my spouse and children get ITINs too?

Often, yes, if they are on your tax return and the IRS rules allow it. We check eligibility for each person before applying.

Does an ITIN let me work or change my immigration status?

No. An ITIN is for tax purposes only. It does not give work authorization or change immigration status.

Do I have to mail my children's documents to the IRS?

For dependents, we can verify passports and birth certificates here in our office. Other documents, such as school or medical records that show U.S. residence, may still need to be sent to the IRS. We tell you exactly what stays with you before we start.

What if I don't have a passport?

Bring the official identification you have, such as a national ID card, birth certificate, driver's license or visa. Several documents can be used together. Call first and we'll tell you if what you have is likely to be enough.

I haven't filed taxes in several years. Can you still help?

Yes. This is common, and it can be fixed. Bring whatever records you have, even if they are incomplete.

My documents are in another language. Can you help?

Yes. We also provide certified translation, so your documents are ready to send with your application.
