NEW TAX LAW

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act: what changed for you.

Signed July 4, 2025, the law changed deductions and credits for 2025 and later returns. Here are the changes we see most often in Brooklyn. We check every one of them on your return.

TIP WORKERS

No tax on tips

Deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips if you work in an occupation that customarily receives tips. Phases out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 married filing jointly).

Tax years 2025–2028

HOURLY WORKERS

No tax on overtime

Deduct the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime pay, up to $12,500 ($25,000 married filing jointly). Same income phase-out as tips.

Tax years 2025–2028

SENIORS

$6,000 senior deduction

An extra $6,000 deduction for each person age 65 or older ($12,000 if both spouses qualify), on top of the standard deduction. Phases out above $75,000 ($150,000 married filing jointly).

Tax years 2025–2028

FAMILIES

Child Tax Credit: $2,200

Up to $2,200 per child under 17, with up to $1,700 refundable. You need at least $2,500 of earned income for the refundable part.

2025 and later, now permanent

CAR BUYERS

Car loan interest deduction

Deduct up to $10,000 a year of interest on a loan for a new personal vehicle assembled in the U.S., bought after 2024. Phases out above $100,000 ($200,000 married filing jointly).

Tax years 2025–2028

NY HOMEOWNERS

Bigger SALT deduction

If you itemize, the cap on state and local taxes, including New York income and property taxes, rose from $10,000 to $40,000 for 2025 and $40,400 for 2026. It is reduced for incomes above $500,000.

2025–2029

EVERYONE

Higher standard deduction

For 2026: $16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household.

Tax year 2026

GIVERS

Charity without itemizing

Starting with 2026, you can deduct up to $1,000 of cash gifts to charity ($2,000 married filing jointly) even if you take the standard deduction.

2026 and later

ENDED

Energy and EV credits

The electric vehicle credits ended for vehicles bought after September 30, 2025. The home energy improvement and residential clean energy credits ended after December 31, 2025.

Changed in 2025

ITIN filers, please read: the tips, overtime and senior deductions need a Social Security number on the return, and married couples must file jointly to claim them. The Child Tax Credit needs a Social Security number for the child and for you, or for at least one spouse on a joint return. A $500 credit for other dependents may still apply. Ask us what applies to your family.

General information from IRS guidance, not tax advice for your situation. Amounts and rules can change, and your results depend on your full return.

IRS CERTIFYING ACCEPTANCE AGENT · ITIN

Filing with an ITIN? Here is what changes for you.

Some new deductions, like no tax on tips and overtime, need a Social Security number. Other credits, like the $500 credit for other dependents, may still apply to ITIN families. We check what applies to you.

As an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent, we help with new ITINs and renewals, usually filed with your tax return, and in most cases your passport goes home with you the same day. An ITIN is for tax purposes only. It does not give work authorization or change immigration status.
