You have a seven-month window to sign up for Medicare. Miss it, and you could pay a penalty for as long as you have coverage.

For most people, the Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after it, seven months in total.

Why timing matters

If you delay Part B without other qualifying coverage, you may pay a monthly late-enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part B, and it grows the longer you wait. People who are still working and covered by an employer plan may have a Special Enrollment Period, but the rules are specific, so check before you skip enrollment.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Will I keep working, and does my employer's plan count?

  • Do I want Original Medicare with a Supplement, or a Medicare Advantage plan?

  • Are my doctors and prescriptions covered?

You can find official information at Medicare.gov and compare plans with the Medicare Plan Finder.
